Yemen Seizes Major Drug Shipments Destined for Sanaa

Security forces in Marib Governorate, northeastern Yemen, have thwarted two attempts to smuggle large quantities of narcotics, which authorities stated were en route to areas controlled by the Houthi militia in the capital, Sanaa.

This operation follows less than 24 hours after another drug shipment was intercepted at the Al-Wadea crossing in Hadhramaut Governorate, intended for smuggling into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Security Media Center of the Ministry of Interior reported on Monday, citing security sources, that one checkpoint belonging to the Special Security Forces in Marib seized 104,000 pills of the narcotic drug "Pregabalin." Simultaneously, another security point confiscated over 1,900 Captagon pills along with one kilogram of hashish, following suspicion of vehicles passing through the area.

Sources indicated that the smugglers employed sophisticated camouflage and concealment methods to evade detection. However, meticulous inspection procedures and the vigilance of security personnel led to the discovery and interception of the contraband. The arrested individuals and seized items have been handed over to the competent authorities for legal proceedings.

These seizures occur amidst a noticeable escalation in the activities of drug smuggling and trafficking networks across Yemen. This phenomenon has expanded during the years of conflict that erupted following the Houthi coup in September 2014, capitalizing on security breaches and multiple smuggling routes, which has led to the proliferation of narcotics in several governorates and an increase in the frequency of intercepted shipments.

Security sources have stated that the growing drug trade represents an increasing security and social challenge, as criminal groups exploit the conflict conditions and weak oversight at some crossings and routes. This has prompted security authorities to intensify pursuit and inspection campaigns on vital roads.

Just one day prior, the security and protection unit at the Al-Wadea crossing in Hadhramaut Governorate announced the thwarting of a drug smuggling attempt hidden within a heavy transport truck bound for Saudi Arabia. The inspection revealed 203 Captagon pills, 795 capsules of Pregabalin, and 3.254 kilograms of opium. A portion of the contraband was concealed within secret compartments and a fire extinguisher, marking one of the latest operations that highlight the escalating activity of smuggling networks in the region.
