Yemeni Coast Guard Seizes Smuggling Vessel in Bab al-Mandab

Yemeni Coast Guard patrols intercepted a commercial sailing vessel named "Tawakkul 1" in the Bab al-Mandab strait last week, thwarting a smuggling operation. The seizure followed a period of surveillance and monitoring due to the vessel's suspected involvement in illicit maritime activities. This operation is part of broader efforts to combat organized smuggling and enhance maritime security within territorial waters.

The Coast Guard Authority, in a statement on its official website, indicated that the vessel and its crew are currently undergoing legal procedures and necessary investigations to clarify the circumstances of the voyage and determine the nature of the seized cargo.

The intercepted shipment includes 500 tons of fertilizers, along with manufacturing equipment and dual-use materials. Relevant authorities are working to complete the systematic procedures in preparation for referring the case to the judiciary. Preliminary investigations suggest the vessel is operated by a local and regional smuggling network involved in illicit trade between Iran, the Horn of Africa, and Yemen.

The Coast Guard Authority reiterated its commitment to performing its duties with efficiency and vigilance, intensifying maritime patrols to counter illegal activities. This commitment aims to protect territorial waters, ensure navigational safety, and bolster maritime security.
